Stanley Cup Finals: Wild Night in Game 1

The Philadelphia Flyers will be remembered for as long as sport is played on this earth. The Flyers are only the fourth team in sports history to come back from a 3-0 deficit. They proceeded to blitz the Montreal Canadiens in five games. Nobody expected the Flyers to make it this far especially after drawing a match-up against the number two seed New Jersey Devils in the first round. But the Flyers fell short in Game 1 against the Chicago Blackhawks in a wild night.

Game 1 featured both teams combining for 11 total goals with the Hawks gaining the upper hand, 6-5. Tomas Kopecky scored the game winning goal on a pass from Kris Versteeg.

The Flyers held one goal leads all game long but failed to put the Hawks away. Philadelphia was not as physical as their past series’ having no penalties called against them in Game 1. They may need to get more physical to protect leads.

Troy Brouwer scored two goals and an assist for Chicago.

We’ve seen this before. Flyers facing adversity and then turning it up once they’re backed up against the walls. Will the Cinderella story Philadelphia Flyers continue their streak and close the book with a fairy tale ending? Let’s look at their strengths below.

Strengths

Nothing to lose. The Flyers are the seventh seeded team in the East, what makes you think that they’ll bow down to anyone especially after their historic comeback against the Boston Bruins? Their confidence is sky high and probably even more. It may look like a one-sided match-up on paper but didn’t we say the same thing about the Flyers-Devils match-up? Philadelphia brings a lot of intangibles.

Physicality and agressiveness. The Flyers physical play has got them this far. And even if the Blackhawks can match them physically, Philadelphia’s grit and intensity will help balance Chicago’s advantage in talent.

Do the Flyers have enough to pull off a miracle? They do have the right mindset and personal belief. It’s hard to speculate since everything that was suppose to happen in the playoffs didn’t happen.

Game 2 will be on Monday night.

NHL Conference Finals Preview: Flyers, Blackhawks up 1-0

The Boston Bruins completed the biggest choke job in sports history. Up 3-0 in the series against the Flyers, the Bruins were forced into a do-or-die Game 7. The Bruins were coincidentally up 3-0 in Game 7 before allowing the Flyers to score 4 goals. Philadelphia advanced to the next round to play the 8th-seeded Montreal Candiens, who also completed an upset of their own by beating the defending champs Pittsburgh Penguins. The top two teams in the Western Conference are in the conference finals, the Chicago Blackhawks and the San Jose Sharks. In a twist of fate, the Eastern Conference finals feature the two lowest seeded teams in the Flyers and Canadiens.

Eastern Conference Finals

Philadelphia Flyers vs. Montreal Canadiens, Flyers up 1-0

The Flyers are still riding high after completing the biggest comeback in sports history. They continued their dominance by trashing the Canadiens in Game 1, 6-0. Michael Leighton notched his first playoff shutout and six different players scored for Philadelphia.

The Flyers’ aggressiveness baffled goalie Jaroslav Halak. Halak played a key role in beating the Capitals and Penguins. Before being dominated by the Flyers, Halak had the highest save percentage in the playoffs with .933.

Philadelphia is a defensive-minded team and it showed. The Canadiens had 28 shots on goal, three more than the Flyers, but failed to get on board. Don’t count out the Canadiens though, their speed and physicality will make this a long series.

Western Conference Finals

Chicago Blackhawks vs. San Jose Sharks, Blackhawks up 1-0

The Sharks lost a close one to the Blackhawks in Game 1. San Jose allowed the game-winning goal with a little under seven minutes left. Antti Niemi saved 44 goals, Dustin Byfuglien and Patrick Sharp scored one goal each.

Chicago has lost only once on the road in the playoffs. Despite that, this will be a long series because the Sharks won’t keel over and just give up the West. San Jose can change the tide and finish games because of their sense of urgency. This is a veteran team that knows how to make the necessary adjustments. Game 1 should be an afterthought for Evgeni Nabokov. He is the second best goalie in the playoffs and it will show in this series.

NHL Playoffs: Second Round Preview

The first-round of the NHL playoffs is finished, and it has been marred by three upsets, all happening in the West. The Washington Capitals were shocked by the 8th-seeded Montreal Canadiens. Two-time MVP Alex Ovechkin was helpless in preventing the Canadiens from completing a monstrous upset. New Jersey won only one game against the streaking Philadelphia Flyers. And the Bruins put a clamp on the 3rd-seeded Buffalo Sabres.

Pittsburgh Penguins vs. Montreal Canadiens

The defending champs proved that there’s absolutely no defense that can keep their offense from cranking up the goals. The Penguins’ offense will be tested against the scrappy and physical play of the Canadiens. Montreal is coming off a huge Game 7 that eliminated the Capitals. If the Canadiens can give Ovechkin problems, it’s possible that Sidney Crosby may have a hard time against Montreal.

Boston Bruins vs. Philadelphia Flyers

The Bruins are slow starters but manage to wear down their opponents as the game goes on. The Flyers held a 3-1 lead before finishing off the Devils. The Bruins slow starts may be taken advantage off by a Flyer team that looks like it has developed a killer instinct.

San Jose Sharks vs. Detroit Red Wings

The Red Wings showed that they still have some left in the tank with their hard earned series win over the Coyotes. The Sharks have finally advanced to the second round after losing in the first round in their four previous playoff appearances. Detroit is a veteran team and their craftiness will pose a challenge for the Sharks. Goalie Craig Anderson is the x-factor — he has the most saves in the postseason so far.

Chicago Blackhawks vs. Vancouver Canucks

This is a great match-up between two defensive minded teams that can also score to win — not to mention a lot of bad blood brewing between the two teams. It will be a physical series — the Blackhawks never give up as shown in last year’s match up when the Canucks had an opportunity to go 3-1 but lost in overtime.

Series will go seven games with the Blackhawks prevailing.

The road to the Stanley Cup continues. Stay tuned puckheads, the second round promises to be as exciting as the first.

NHL Playoff Match-Up Previews

The NHL playoffs have started and are already off to an exciting start. The defending champ Pittsburgh Penguins already dropped a close game to the Ottawa Senators, the 7th seeded Philadelphia Flyers surprised the New Jersey Devils with superb goalie play by Brian Boucher, the Coyotes scored the goal-winning shot in the third period to hold off the Red Wings, and the Avalanche shocked the top-seeded Sharks.

West quarterfinals

(7) Nashville Predators vs (2) Chicago Blackhawks

The Predators offense is underrated and their defense is physical and capable of stifling the talented Blackhawks. Pekka Rinne will keep the Predators in the series, but the Blackhawks are too good for the overachieving Predators. Antti Niemi’s inexperience is a weakness but not a liability. This is a chance for him to prove his worth.

(6) Los Angeles Kings vs (3) Vancouver Canucks

The Kings youth will give the Canucks a challenge, but Vancouver will grind out the series win. Roberto Luongo’s net skills and experience will prevail for the Canucks. This is an exciting match-up and it wouldn’t be surprising if the Kings mature overnight.

(5) Detroit Red Wings vs (4) Phoenix Coyotes

The Red Wings are more experienced and make their 19th consecutive appearance in the playoffs, but I really like the Coyotes in this series. Why? Coach David Tippett, Derek Morris and Ikya Bryzgalov. It’s the Coyotes’ time now. Defense will trump experience. Phoenix already up 1-0 in the series.

(8) Colorado Avalanche vs (1) San Jose Sharks

The Avalanche stole one in San Jose with a late goal by Chris Stewart. Will the Avalanche upset the Sharks? Uh, N-O. The Sharks will avoid back-to-back meltdowns in the playoffs. They’ve learned their lesson. Plus, Colorado lacks the experience to finish off the Sharks.

East quarterfinals

(8) Montreal Canadiens vs (1) Washington Capitals

The reward for the Canadiens for barely making it to the playoffs? A first-round match-up against the team with the best record during the regular season. Goaltender Halak will keep things close and Montreal will steal a game, but Alex Ovechkin will find a way to to get his goals.

(7) Philadelphia Flyers vs (2) New Jersey Devils

The Flyers aggressiveness and eagerness to mix it up make this series interesting. They’ve already stolen a game in New Jersey. Brian Boucher gives the Flyers a shot at an upset.

(6) Boston Bruins vs (3) Buffalo Sabres

Tough match-up for the Sabres considering the injuries they’ve suffered late in the season. Tuukka Rask’s performance will dictate the series. He needs to focus for the Bruins to have a chance at an upset. The Sabres don’t get enough respect and this is their chance to earn some.

(5) Ottawa Senators vs (4) Pittsburgh Penguins

The defending champs are already down a game — this loss will serve as a wake-up call for them. Alex Kovalev’s absence will be too much for the Senators to overcome in the long run.
