NFC South

QB Josh Freeman, Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Freeman better savor the moment because he’ll be going up against a formidable Pittsburgh D this week. Still, the sophomore QB has progressed faster than expected. He has thrown only one interception so far. He’s got the basic rule of football down: protect the ball at all times. We’ll see just how far he has progressed in the Steelers game.

QB Drew Brees, New Orleans Saints. Brees continues to impress and is the best QB in the NFL right now (sorry Manning fans). He has no interceptions and led the charge to set-up his kicker for the game winner in San Francisco. His O-line looked pretty iffy though. The Niners sacked him twice. Brees is fifth in the league in QB rating.

RB Jason Snelling, Atlanta Falcons. The third string running back had his breakout game against the helpless Cardinals. He rushed for 129 yards and had five catches for 57 yards. He scored three touchdowns; Two rushing and one receiving.

QB Matt Ryan, Atlanta Falcons. After a lackluster Week 1, Ryan bounced back nicely and ripped the Cardinals for 225 yards and three touchdowns.

Sorry Panthers fans. Maybe when Jimmy Clausen isn’t that cocky and arrogant.

NFC West

RB Frank Gore, San Francisco 49ers. The Niners fell short but Gore was a stud. He had 168 total yards and scored a touchdown each for rushing and receiving. He scored the last score that supposedly was going to send the game into overtime.

WR Tim Hightower, Arizona Cardinals. Boy, the Cards sure miss Kurt Warner. Luckily for them they have a healthy Tim Hightower. He averaged an astonishing 10.5 yards against the Falcons and finished with 115 yards and a touchdown.

Sorry Seahawks fans. Maybe when Matt Haselbeck realizes he’s a back-up at this stage in his career.

Sorry Rams fans. Maybe when Sam Bradford starts showing progress week in and week out.

NFC South – Top Performers

New Orleans’ D. Drew Brees and the Saints’ offense produced “only” two touchdowns. Good thing that their defense came to play. Minnesota failed to score a point in the second half and made Brett Favre look more than his 40-year-old age.

WR Steve Smith, Carolina Panthers. Carolina lost despite Smith’s 5-reception, 75 yards and one touchdown game. He looked like a stud out there. What makes Smith a winner? Smith just came back from a broken arm injury and instantly produced.

QB Drew Brees, New Orleans Saints. He was not his Super Bowl MVP self. Brees completed 75 percent of his passes and threw a touchdown. Its a little too much to ask but only 237 passing yards? Get it together, Drew.

QB Josh Freeman, Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He outplayed a veteran QB and wasn’t scared to throw risky passes. You gotta admire that kind of confidence in a young QB.

NFC West – Top Performers

St. Louis Rams Coaching Staff. Questionable playcalling and a loss. So why are the Rams winners? They sped up rookie QB Sam Bradford’s learning curve by giving him the confidence to throw. Bradford summed it up nicely, “But I threw it a lot in college, so I’m used to it.”

Bradford was picked off three times and yet the Rams only lost by three.

QB Derek Anderson, Arizona Cardinals. Anderson is known as being wildly inconsistent. Good thing for the Cardinals Anderson chose the perfect time to have a great game. He threw for 297 yards and one touchdown.

Head Coach Pete Carroll, Seattle Seahawks. Carroll has not found success in his previous coaching jobs in the NFL. Before returning to his first NFL game since 1999, he was hounded with distractions involving Reggie Bush and USC. The stacks were against him but Carroll won in his first game back. He beat a solid team in the Denver Broncos.

First, here are some teams to watch in the AFC division.  One team that you will likely see in the postseason is the Indianapolis Colts.  With Peyton Manning, one of the best quarterbacks to play the game, the Colts have a good shot of getting to the Super Bowl for a second straight year.

Despite a disappointing end to last year, I think the San Diego Chargers will have a great season this year.  It won’t be the same without running back LaDainian Tomlinson, but rookie Ryan Matthews is sure to be a good replacement at the RB position.

Another team that I think could be a huge threat this year is the Baltimore Ravens.  The Ravens have acquired some great receivers during the offseason such as Anquan Boldin and T.J. Houshmandzadeh which will create good weapons for the rising star, Joe Flacco.

I’m thinking the New York Jets are likely to win the AFC East and have a great season with their outstanding defense, but I doubt they will make it as far in the playoffs as last year unless quarterback Mark Sanchez can step it up this season.

There are a lot of great teams in the AFC, but I think the Colts will be the team to make it to the Super Bowl.

Next is the NFC, which I honestly don’t think is as strong as the AFC.  The defending champs should easily make the playoffs again with Drew Brees and their great offense, though I don’t see the New Orleans Saints making another Super Bowl run.

The Dallas Cowboys have a lot of talent on their team, but they have to stay consistent to have any hopes of playing at their stadium for the Super Bowl.

Another team with a lot of talent that has a good shot at the Super Bowl is the Green Bay Packers.  Overall they have a great offense and defense that could win them the division.

After the retirement of Kurt Warner, I don’t look at any of the teams in the NFC West as being that good, but I predict that the San Francisco 49ers will be able to win it and go to the playoffs.

The team to beat in the NFC is sure to be the Packers, and I’m thinking that they will be going the Super Bowl to take on the Colts

Colts vs Packers in the Super Bowl is my prediction.  Aaron Rodgers and the Packs are going to be a great team,  but I think Peyton is going to lead the Colts to victory and get his second ring after a not so great ending last year in the Super Bowl.

The Saints were down 10-6 coming out of halftime and its seemingly unstoppable offense had stalled. Enter Sean Payton and rookie kicker Thomas Morstead. Morstead kicked a perfect “looper” that Colts’ reserve receiver Hank Baskett couldn’t handle. Baskett was caught off guard, which led to Saints’ safety Chris Reis’ recovery of the football.

The onside kick effectively shifted the momentum in the Saints favor. Sure, the Colts still scored seven points in the third quarter after a routine drive by Peyton Manning, but the onside kick jumpstarted the Saints offense. It was there that the Saints never looked back. After Matt Stover missed a field goal late in the third quarter, the Saints had regained their composure and luster.

At the start of the fourth quarter, the Colts couldn’t prevent the Saints’ offense from kicking into high gear. Drew Brees threw a 2-yard touchdown pass to Jeremy Shockey and completed a two-point conversion attempt that put the Saints up by a touchdown.

You couldn’t blame the Who Dat? Nation for being a little antsy when four-time MVP Peyton Manning took the field with four minutes left and the Saints only up by a score. You know the drill – the Colts down, Manning leads his team down the field for the win.

This time it was different. It was destiny and no one, even Manning, could prevent destiny. In one quick swoop cornerback Tracy Porter snatched a Manning pass and returned it for a 74-yard touchdown return.

There would be no come-from-behind drives for Manning. The night belonged to the Saints. New Orleans’ head coach Sean Payton took a gamble and it paid off. It changed the whole tone of the game.

No longer were people asking, “Who Dat!?”. No more questions on who deserved it more because it was the Saints who won Super Bowl XLIV – “Dat Who!”

The Saints are playing spectacular football and averaging 36.9 points in their 10 wins.  Their offense, led by quarterback Drew Brees, has seen twelve different players scoring touchdowns this season.  Tonight may be their toughest match-up yet.

The Patriots are still stinging from the recent loss to the Colts, the NFLs only other undefeated team, after squandering a fourth quarter 17 point lead.  They’ll be looking to redeem themselves tonight, and we’re sure to see lots of activity between Tom Brady and his favorite receiver Wes Welker.

As Louisiana natives, it should come as no surprise that Spencer (9-3), Chase (7-5), David (6-6), and I (10-2) are predicting the Saints stay undefeated.  Who do you think will win?  Take our poll and let us know.

Drew Brees is having another amazing year at quarterback and finding receivers every where he turns as the Saints look to start their season at 7-0 for only the second time in team history.  The Falcons need to get their 25th ranked defense on track if they want to have any hopes for winning the NFC South.  Their weak secondary could prove to be a big problem against Brees and the Saints.

That brings us to our Performer of the Week, who stays undefeated through week 6. Drew Brees gets the honor of being our Performer of the Week.

In the New Orleans Saints 48 – 27 win, Drew Brees threw for 4 touchdowns and 369 yards in his 23 of 30 pass attempts. He even came close to a perfect passer rating with 156.8 and completed 15 passes in a row. He wasn’t sacked a single time and didn’t turn the ball over.

Drew Brees came in 2nd in fantasy football points to Tom Brady, but the Saints faced an undefeated team, whereas the Patriots…well, they faced the no-win Titans. So that put Brees over the top (not to mention that he’s my fantasy football quarterback).

The New Orleans Saints are now 5 – 0. With the way they’ve been playing, Drew Brees is bound to end up on our list again sometime soon.
