Rain didn’t matter for Denny Hamlin at Texas Motor Speedway yesterday as he held off Jimmie Johnson. Hamlin finished the race in a 12-lap shootout. Hamlin has won two of the past three races in similar trends — races that were postponed by rain.
Hamlin managed to avoid a nine-car crash that involved pole leader Tony Stewart. Jeff Gordon was also involved in the crash. Gordon led the race for 124 laps before crashing with Stewart.
Stewart quickly took the blame for the crash, “Definitely my fault “.
The race restarted with Hamlin on the outside and Jeff Burton on the inside. Burton made the mistake of only changing two tires on a pit stop. This proved to be his downfall as he did not have enough left to legitimately challenge Hamlin. Johnson said after the race, “Maybe one more lap I could have been alongside the 11 and had a victory”.
Hamlin picked up his 10th career NASCAR Sprint Cup win. He was still recovering from surgery on his torn ACL.
It was a great run for Hamlin who didn’t lead until the final 12 laps — he picked up his second win of the year.
Kyle Busch finished third, Kurt Busch was fourth, Kasey Kahne finished fifth.
Mark Martin, Kevin Harvick, Dale Earnhardt Jr, Martin Truex Jr. and Greg Biffle rounded up the bottom five of the top ten.
